Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. (Mt. 28:19)
Through baptism a person is united with Jesus Christ, incorporated into his redemptive death and resurrection and washed clean of original sin. Baptism establishes a person as a living member of the Body of Christ. Baptism sets a person on a lifelong journey of conversion where one comes to know Jesus as Lord and Savior as well as knowing oneself as a beloved son or daughter of God through Christ. Because Baptism can only be received once, the Catholic Church does not re-baptize someone if he or she has already been baptized according to the formula given by Christ himself …in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
The Catholic Church practices baptism of both adults and infants.
The Christian Church has practiced infant baptism from its earliest days because we recognize that before we have chosen God, God has already chosen us. Baptism is a grace, an undeserved gift from God. “Infant Baptism presupposes that Christian parents will raise the baptized child in the faith. It is an injustice to deprive the child of Baptism out of a mistaken liberality. One cannot deprive a child of love so that he or she can later decide on love for oneself: so too it would be an injustice if believing parents were to deprive their child of God’s grace in Baptism (or Confirmation).” (Youcat #197) If a person is baptized as an infant then, at some point in life, he or she must ratify this great gift and claim it for him or herself in order that this gift might bear true fruit.
