We are a healthier Tennessee Church!

We've worked hard to show ourselves and Tennessee that we value the health of our congregation and our state. Our recognition packet will arrive in a few weeks, including a certificate of recognition signed by Governor Haslam that we'll be able to display.

We've come a long way, but this is just the beginning. Let's all keep our Small Starts going. And don't forget you can find more Small Starts for you and your family on healthierTN.com Let's keep moving!

    In health,

    Delores

Here is what you can do during our 40 Days of Wellness!

                                                             St. Dominic Church
An Official Healthier Tennessee Place of Worship
                                                                        Presents
                                            40 DAYS OF WELLNESS

WHAT IS IT? An opportunity to make one small change to affect your health in conjunction with your parish family.

WHEN DOES IT START?  The program runs from September 14 to October 23.

HOW DOES IT WORK? You pick one “small start” from the Healthy Tennessee web site (healthiertn.com>small starts tools>for the individual) or from the nurse’s bulletin board (near the sacristy). Write your name, weight (optional) and which change you have chosen on the tear-off below and put it in the collection plate or the box near the nurse’s bulletin board. You can also email the information to dbertuso@me.com. Your parish nurse will be the only person who will see this information. At the end of 40 days, submit your name, weight (optional) and how the change worked for you in the same manner. That’s all there is to it!

WHY? Because healthier parishioners have more energy to serve Christ!! “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the holy Spirit with you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own?” 1 Corinthians 6:19

    Which change have you selected?????

Here are some of the small steps you can choose:

*Walk when you talk on the phone
*Use your non-dominant hand when you eat

*Partner with a friend for exercise
*Curb hunger between meals with water
    *Make Mondays meatless
*Put your salad dressing on the side
*Substitute salad dressing for your usual snacks
*Sleep at least 7 hrs per night
*Eat 5 servings of produce per day
*Learn to read and understand nutrition labels
    *Skip the late night snack
*Be active when you would usually be sedentary
    *Count your daily calories
*Sneak in some exercise during commercial breaks
    *Stretch 10 minutes every day
*Eat mindfully (notice when and where you eat—no distractions)
*Substitute whole grains for refined flours
    *Take the stairs
*Replace sugary drinks with healthier options
    *Eat breakfast
    *Exercise 30 minutes per day
    *Park farther away
*Switch to a lower fat dairy product
    *For tobacco users:
                **Know your triggers
                **Walk rather than smoke
**Make a list of why you want to quit
**Make a list of distractions to use when the urge to smoke comes
**Set a date to quit tobacco
